The National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York is dedicated to educating the community about the vibrant history of Colonial New York from its exploration by Henry Hudson in 1609, to the founding of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island in 1625 through the post-Revolutionary War Federal period when New York served as the capital of the new United States. The New York Society’s educational mission is concentrated on the vital and prominent role of women across a wide swath of society. The prosperous and politically savvy She Merchants of New Amsterdam, the indefatigable women who cooked, cleaned and laundered their contributions to the founding of America, and the wives of prominent scholars and statesmen all have important stories to tell. We welcome students, scholars, patriots and history lovers to participate in our educational programs and visit our historic house museum, Van Cortlandt House Museum, where hands-on, interactive exhibits, biographies and historical documents bring to life this important period in America’s history.
