The Van Cortlandt House Museum (VCHM) is owned by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, operated by the National Society of the Colonial Dames in the State of New York (NSCDNY), and is a member of the Historic House Trust of New York City (HHT). The museum has been stewarded by the NSCDNY for 127 years and was the first public-private collaboration in New York City.
VCHM is a 1748 house that sits on a beautiful 1-acre lot within Van Cortlandt Park in the northwest Bronx. It is a National Historic Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and both its exterior and interior are designated New York City Landmarks.
We strive to be a resource for our community with educational, experiential, culturally responsive, and fun programming as well as to provide a high level of curatorial experience for those interested in early American history and decorative arts.
The role of the Visitor Services Associate (VSA) of Van Cortlandt House Museum (VCHM) is to be the primary point of contact for museum visitors: greeting them, providing information about exhibits and programs, selling admission tickets and retail items, ensuring the smooth operation of the admissions desk and museum shop, answering inquiries, and ensuring a positive visitor experience by maintaining a welcoming, inclusive, and informative atmosphere within the museum. The VSA will also assist with museum programs and events.

This is a part-time, hourly position with a rate of $20/hour.
Work Hours: Varies. There are (2) open positions for the VSA role. One will be every Weds, Thurs, and Sun from 10:30 AM - 4 PM and the other will be every other Sunday from 11 AM - 4 PM, each with opportunities for occasional flex hours to assist with museum programs and events.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Greet and welcome visitors, providing exceptional customer service and ensuring a positive experience;
- Open and close the museum and cash register;
- Process admissions and retail transactions accurately using a point-of-sale system;
- Provide information about the museum’s history, exhibitions, and upcoming events;
- Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and visually appealing museum shop;
- Monitor visitor areas to ensure safety and adherence to museum policies;
- Assist in the planning, setup, and execution of museum events and educational programs;
- Support the museum’s craft and activity programs during events and special initiatives;
- Perform light administrative tasks, including answering phones and responding to inquiries;
- Restock merchandise and assist with inventory management in the museum shop;
- Collaborate with museum staff on projects and initiatives as needed.
- Have weekend (particularly Sunday) availability with the flexibility to work additional hours as needed for museum events and programs;
- Engage in a generous and thoughtful way with all visitors to VCHM, including community members, community leaders, and Van Cortlandt Park stakeholders;
- Work effectively with NSCDNY staff, HHT staff, Parks Department staff, and the Van Cortlandt Park Alliance (VCPA) staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Excellent customer service skills;
- Strong communication skills;
- Fluency in Spanish preferred;
- Experience with using point-of-sale systems (such as Clover or Square);
- Ability to effectively work with diverse populations;
- Ability to work with a wide variety of museum and park constituents, including members of the NSCDNY, elected officials, Parks Department personnel, families, children, and educators;
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
